Cairo Film Festival Roundup.

The Cairo Film Connection took place on December 5, 6, and 7, 2010. A jury presided by Dr. Samir Seif and comprised of four film experts selected 10 projects in pre-production and 2 in post-production to take part of the first edition of the Cairo Film Connection. The Egyptian Ministry of Culture offered a prize of LE 100,000 to one of the projects in pre-production. During the Cairo Film Connection the members of the jury, Jacques Akchoti (France,) Sue Austen, (UK) Marie-Pierre Duhamel (France,) Khaireya El Beshlawi (Egypt) and the president Dr. Samir Seif (Egypt) met with all the projects individually in order to select the project that will receive the prize given by the Ministry of Culture. They selected 69 Messaha Square (Egypt,) directed by Ayten Amin and produced by Ihab Ayoub, to win the prize of LE 100,000 given by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. Special mention was given to the project Until Morning (Lebanon/USA), directed by Hisham Bizri and produced by Andrew Fierberg.

In the duration of the three days there were intensive meetings and one-to-one sessions between the producers and directors of the selected projects, and with industry professionals both from Egypt and abroad.  It is worth noting that the Cairo Film Connection offered filmmakers the unique opportunity to meet with Egyptian producers and distributors.  These Egyptian producers are monumental in shaping the Egyptian and Arab film industry and market, and yet they are often absent from international forums and festivals.    It was an unprecedented opportunity to have them all present and engaged in the discussions about the projects.  The Cairo Film Connection was a time of synergy, collaboration, and networking for all those present.

On December 3, 2010 a lunch took place in Dahshur to launch the Cairo Film Ccnnection at the Residence of Marianne Khoury. 300 guests participated in the event which allowed all involved to network freely in a casual environment.

On December 7, 2010, the Cairo Film Connection hosted a conversation with Dr. Giuliana Bruno.  She met with the participants, the producers, the filmmakers, the industry delegates as well as the interested audience to discuss and debate on the topics of film and visual culture.

Giuliana Bruno is Professor of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University. She is an internationally renowned film scholar, who has published numerous books and articles worldwide.

Her seminal book Atlas of Emotion: Journeys in Art, Architecture, and Film (Verso, 2002) won the 2004 Kraszna-Krausz Book Award for "the world's best book on the moving image," and was named a Book of the Year 2003 by the Guardian.

Bruno lectures internationally on film and visual culture, including, recently, at universities in Europe and Asia, the Dia Center for the Arts in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, The Museum of Art for the XXI Century in Rome, the Tate Modern and the Louvre Museum.

She is featured in Visual Culture Studies: Interviews with Key Thinkers as one of the most influential intellectuals working today in visual studies (Sage, 2008).

She is currently working on a book entitled Fabrics of the Visual: On the Surface of Media.

Ms. Marianne Khoury, producer and filmmaker at Misr International Films, moderated the talk.  Other speakers at the event included Nigerian producer, Mr. Victor Okhai and Canadian/Egyptian filmmaker, Mr. Milad Bessada.

Press Conference
Press Conference held at the Supreme Council For Culture to announce the launching of the Cairo Film Connection under the auspices of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture and organized by the Cairo International Film Festival, the National Council For Cinema and Misr International Films. The conference was attended by journalists, filmmakers, and producers. Mr. Khaled Abdelgelil, Ms. Soheir Abdelkader, and Ms. Marianne Khoury spoke about this new initiative.
